Leak detection: a challenging exercise

Leaks are costly for consumers and for the environment, and harmful to infrastructure and roads. Leaks in the distribution network have to be repaired as quickly as possible.

To be able to intervene quickly, VIVAQUA carries out monitoring on a daily basis of the consumption of the municipalities it serves, and investigates any suspicious increases.

Listening to the pipes

The noise generated by the leak is used to locate the site of the problem. First of all, VIVAQUA technicians “listen” to the ground or pipes using an aquaphone. Placed on the ground or on pipes, this device amplifies the sounds generated by the leak, like a doctor’s stethoscope. Then, the location is more precisely determined using an electronic device equipped with sensors. VIVAQUA recently began testing the detection of leaks via satellite.
